Insomnia, the UK’s biggest gaming festival, kicks off this Friday at Birmingham’s NEC and will for the very first time feature a drone racing element.

The Drone Racing iSeries will be delivered in association with the team at the UK Drone Show; it’ll be composed of up to 36 drone racing pilots who’ll battle it out to be named champion on Saturday afternoon.

A deal was agreed between event organisers Multiplay and the UK Drone Show which’ll see the see the Drone Racing iSeries become a part of each and every Insomnia festival for at least the next three years. The UK Drone Show held the UK’s largest indoor drone racing event to date with over 6500 attendees.

It’s likely to be the first time many Insomnia attendees will get to see drone racing live, and with a course that will accommodate speeds of up to 60mph featuring some of the UK’s best pilots, it should be a grand introduction.

The inaugural event has a prize pool of at least £5,000 with at least £2,500 going to the winner.

Some of the featured pilots include Luke ‘BanniUK’ Bannister the winner of the World Drone Prix and one of two featured pilots in Ford’s recent ‘Dronekhana’ ads, his XBlades teammate and fellow star of the advert Brett Collis, British Nationals Drone Racing Champion James ‘Jab1a’ Bowles, Matt ‘add1ct3dd’ Evans and many more.

Craig Fletcher, CEO and Founder of Multiplay said: “The Drone Racing iSeries at this year’s Insomnia will add an extra dimension to the festival. The UK is home to some of the best drone racing teams in the world and they will be battling it out at i58, presenting a real spectacle for the Insomnia community.

“It demonstrates that the festival is branching out to different areas of esports, with this representing a new category we’re dubbing RCSports. We can’t wait to see the response from our community once this debuts in August.”
