The new poster for the revived BattleBots 2016 season is disappointing.
As far as giving us information, the poster does its job. The season premiere of BattleBots will happen June 23, Thursday 8/7c on ABC. (Hashtag BattleBots). Other than telling us what we already know, it’s a let down.
The biggest disappointment is the change in logo. Moving away from the hard steel, sci-fi Battlestar Galactica look, the new logo is grittier and… bronzer? Alright, maybe that’s fine. But the worst is changing the ‘O’ into a spinning gear. It’s very distracting. Hard to read the name of the show at a glance.
The logo probably turned out this way because of the special BattleBots episode showing on Tuesday, May 10th. The name of the special? BattleBots: The Gears Awaken. They’re hitting the gear theme hard. From EW:
The preview special will feature 12 homemade robots battling in a series of rumble matches, the winners of which will occupy a limited number of available slots among the final 48 competitors vying for the championship. Alison Haislip will provide sideline commentary, while ESPN’s Samantha Ponder is set to host. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor Clark Gregg guest-judges The Gears Awaken alongside main judges Fon Davis and Jessica Chobot.
Speaking of hitting things hard – this poster must have been brought to us by the letter ‘B’. They threw every ‘B’ adjective they could think of onto this poster. Alliteration doesn’t always make things better, boys.
Maybe they should have just gone back to the retro logo. Retro’s cool now, right? Comparison of all three below.
